Frequently Asked Questions

1) I am interested in a membership with the United Nations Association in Canada. How do I get one?
Please refer to our Membership page.

2) I am interested in working with the United Nations Association in Canada either in a paid or volunteer capacity, either nationally, or with the Edmonton Branch. Who do I contact?
The United Nations Association in Canada is a small non-governmental organization whose primary focus is educational outreach to Canadians in order to foster an understanding of and support for the United Nations system in this country.
We’re always grateful for people to help with our work. However, due to limited resources we don’t always have the space to accommodate such generous offers. Please sign up to the Edmonton Branch newsletter to get informed about volunteer opportunities with our Branch, and/or check UNA-Canada’s national website’s volunteer section for possible further opportunities and their contact information.
If you are currently living outside Canada, but are looking to volunteer with a United Nations Association (UNA), we suggest you check the World Federation of the United Nations Associations (WFUNA) website for the nearest UNA and branch.

3) I am interested in working for the United Nations or in the field of international relations in general. Who do I contact?
The United Nations Association in Canada is a non-governmental organization, whose primary focus is educational outreach to Canadians in order to foster an understanding of and support for the United Nations system in this country. We are not involved in any overseas placement opportunities (with the exception of our youth International Internship Programme). For further information on the national UNA-Canada organization, you can visit www.unac.org.

4) I am a refugee interested in coming to Canada. Who do I contact?
As mentioned above, the United Nations Association in Canada is a non-governmental organization, whose primary focus is educational outreach to Canadians in order to foster an understanding of and support for the United Nations system in this country. We are not involved in any refugee claims. Please contact Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada if you are in need to claim refugee protection, find services for refugees in Canada, and/or would like to appeal a refugee claim!

The United Nations Association in Canada is not an office of the United Nations itself and is not a recruitment office for the United Nations or its related agencies.

You should note that there is not a UN office per se in Canada – although the headquarters of the International Civil Aviation Organization (one of the Specialized Agencies) is in Montreal, along with two UN Convention monitoring offices that are also in Montreal.

The United Nations posts job openings through a variety of channels. Each Agency and Programme handles much of its own recruitment so there is not a single point of contact. You can access the UN system and its various Agencies and Programmes through its general website at www.un.org.

Please note that the UN system operates under a quota process with respect to permanent staffing to ensure that all member states are adequately represented in the international civil service.

You might like to make contact with CANADEM (Canadian Resource Bank for Democracy and Human Rights). Its mandate is to create and manage a resource bank of Canadians with skills in areas such as human rights, peacebuilding or democracy, and serve as a civilian standby mechanism for the UN and other international agencies conducting field operations. Individual Canadians can use CANADEM as a way to be considered for international placements.
